| Toymaker expresses thanks to lake retailer |
|
Friday, November 20, 2009
Sales of video games are down in the U.S. compared to last year, according to recent data from NPD Group, a market research firm. Meanwhile, sales of board and card games that bring people face-to-face are up, despite a decrease in overall toy sales.
When I was a young boy, there was a small toy store at the end of my street. One of my great pleasures was to go there each week and marvel at the amazing toys and games lining the shelves. I now have the good fortune to be a toymaker myself. This is how I came to know The Cottage Gate, a small Hardy retailer who sells my games to the public
I often receive emails from Hardy consumers thanking me for making Ruckus, a family game I created that has been well-received. I tell them to thank The Cottage Gate, who has sold Ruckus so enthusiastically, they've blown away competition that includes large stores and chains throughout the U.S..
Like other small retailers around the country, The Cottage Gate is on the front line, conversing with consumers on a daily basis on the topic of fun. It is to them that I attribute the re-alignment towards a more personal kind of play. In an environment that seems ceaselessly to be moving in the direction of mass marketing, the knowledge and enthusiasm their staff brings to the table is a potent force in spreading the word about family-friendly toys and games that might otherwise never gain a foothold.
I wish to thank The Cottage Gate, for the long hours, boundless enthusiasm, and willingness to weather hard economic times. Above all, thank you for keeping alive a tradition that dates back to my fondest childhood memories.
