Ferrum men win first game, 80-55

MANHATTAN, N.Y. -- Derek Mitchell scored a career-best 29 points and grabbed 20 rebounds Saturday to guide Ferrum College to an 80-55 non-conference triumph over Elmira (N.Y.) College at the New York University Tip-Off tournament.

With the victory, the Panthers stop a three-game losing streak dating to last season.

Mitchell, who notched his third double-double of the season, made 11 of 18 shots from the field and was 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. He also collected three steals.

Mitchell, a junior, netted the Panthers' first 12 points, but Ferrum (1-2) needed an 18-1 run late in the first half to settle the issue.

Ferrum made 44.9 percent of its shots and forced 26 turnovers.

Jerrell Wade (Franklin County) tallied 11 points and passed out seven assists and Daryl Hart also scored 11 points.

David Nelson paced Elmira (1-2) with 14 points and Bobby DiPiazza added 11 points. Also, Jon Adamson scored five points and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.

Elmira was 14 of 52 (25.9 percent) from the field, 9 of 29 (31 percent) from beyond the 3-point arc.

Ferrum women fall in semifinals, 89-78

ARLINGTON -- Gwynedd Mercy (Pa.) College overcame an eight-point deficit at intermission by outscoring Ferrum College, 55-36, in the second half for an 89-78 non-conference women's basketball victory over the Panthers in the semifinals of the Marymount University Marine Marine Corps Tip-Off tournament.

Ferrum (1-1) led 42-34 at halftime.

Brittney Bullock, a junior, paced the Panthers with a game-best 24 points on an 8 of 17 shooting display. She was 7 of 10 from the free-throw line.

Ashley Norton finished with 19 points and Telsa Akers and Tonya Wright each netted 13.

Akers passed out a game-best eight assists.

Kristen Keith scored six points and pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.

Gwynedd Mercy (2-0) placed four players in double figures and seven others contributed points to the victory.

Jackie Dooley led Gwynedd Mercy with 15 points, while Brittany Neill and Kate Wisniewski each scored 14 points and Erica Fulforth tallied 12.

Gwynedd Mercy outrebounded Ferrum, 47-36.

Ferrum women win season opener

ARLINGTON -- Ashley Norton tallied a team-best 23 points Friday night to lead Ferrum College's women's basketball team to an 82-74 non-conference triumph over Catholic (D.C.) University of America in the opening round of the Marymount University Marine Tip-Off tournament.

The contest was the season opener for both teams.

Norton, a senior, made 6 of 11 shots from the field. She hit four 3-point field goals and distributed six assists.

Brittney Bullock netted 19 points and corralled 10 rebounds, while Tonya Wright scored 16 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and passed out five assists.

Brianna Peterson led Catholic with 23 points.

Also, Jenny McGann finished with 16 points, Jill Woerner tallied 14 and Kelly Ryan had 10.

Eagles to face Staunton River

MONETA -- Franklin County's girls' varsity and junior varsity basketball teams will scrimmage Staunton River Tuesday.

The jayvee scrimmage tips off at 6 p.m. with the varsity scrimmage to follow at 7:30 p.m.

FCHS's varsity squad finished 24-2 last year and won the Western Valley District's regular-season and tournament titles. Its season ended with a loss to Forest Park in the semifinals of the Northwest Regionals.

FCHS hoops to scrimmage Salem, Byrd

Franklin County's boys' varsity and junior varsity basketball teams will scrimmage Salem and William Byrd Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tuesday's scrimmage against Salem is on the road. The jayvee scrimmage will be played at West Salem Elementary School at 5 p.m. and the varsity scrimmage will take place at Salem High School at 5 p.m.

Wednesday's scrimmages are set for 3 p.m. at home in Ramsey and Hawkins gyms.

Football banquet is set for Dec. 12

WIRTZ -- Franklin County's annual postseason football awards banquet will be held Saturday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. at the W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center at Smith Mountain Lake.

The Franklin County Football Club sponsors the banquet each year.

Members of the Eagles' junior varsity and varsity football team and the varsity cheerleading squad will be honored at the banquet.

Guest speaker is former FCHS head football coach Billy Miles.

A buffet dinner will be served.

Tickets are $15.

Tickets can be purchased at the high school athletic department office and at the following locations: Redwood Express Mart in Redwood and Fidelity Bank in Rocky Mount.

Hudson wins final FCS race for 2009

CALLAWAY -- Chad Hudson of Patrick Springs won the 25-lap Pure Stock feature Saturday night at Franklin County Speedway (FCS).

The track's 2009 season ended with Saturday's card.

Hudson inherited the win when the car driven by Ethan Brown of New Castle was disqualified for employing an illegal carburetor.

John Weaver of Moneta came in second in the final finishing order.

In other races:

"Jason Lumsden of Rocky Mount won the Mini Stock race. Wesley Thompson of Vinton took second.

"Jimmy Cooper of Asheboro, N.C. won the U-Car and Any Car races.

Racing returns to FCS for the 2010 season in March.
