Young wins FNP Racing Contest

Dwayne Young of Rocky Mount is the winner of the Racing Contest, sponsored by The Franklin News-Post (FNP) and its advertisers during the NASCAR Sprint Cup season.

Young wins the $25 weekly first-place prize. He is the fourth different winner this season.

Young selected Kasey Kahne, Brian Vickers and Juan Montoya as his drivers for this past Sunday's race in Atlanta.

Based on the Cup scoring system, Young netted 486 points.

Kahne came in fourth (160 points) and earned bonus points (10) for leading the most laps to finish with 170.

Montoya placed third (165 points) and received bonus points (5) for leading to finish with 170.

Vickers was seventh and collected 146 points.

The Sprint Cup Series is off this weekend. The next race is Sunday, March 21 in Bristol, Tenn.

A contest entry form for that race will be published in Monday's edition of The Franklin News-Post.

Committee to raffle marshal slots

The Bassmaster Elite Series Blue Ridge Brawl tournament committee is raffling two marshal slots for the event, which returns to the Smith Mountain Lake area next month.

Marshals are permitted to ride on the boats with the touring professionals and they also provide technical support to ESPN in its coverage of the tournament.

The marshal program began last year and is only offered during Elite Series tournaments.

To be a marshal, one must be willing to commit to two days of the tournament. One can participate on the third day on a first-come, first-serve basis.

The committee will be raffling off the two marshal slots along with a free, one-year membership to BASS.

Cost is $25 per ticket.

The drawing is set for Thursday, March 11.

Tickets can be purchased at the following locations: Smith Mountain Lake Welcome Center, Bedford Area Welcome Center, Parkway Marina in Huddleston, Mariners Landing Resort and Conference Center, Bridgewater Marina, Virginia Outdoorsman, Franklin County Chamber of Commerce and Franklin County Department of Parks and Recreation.

Game to benefit Komen Foundation

Franklin County's non-district varsity softball contest against Group AA Jefferson Forest, scheduled for Tuesday, will benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

The foundation is dedicated to the education and research about the causes and treatments for breast cancer and the search for a cure, according to its website.

Game time is 6:30 p.m. at Benjamin Franklin Middle School.

March Madness hoops tournament is slated

The March Madness men's basketball tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, March 19-20 at Benjamin Franklin Middle School.

Tournament field is limited to eight teams with a maximum of 10 players per team.

Entry fee is $200 per team.

A cash prize will be awarded to the first-place team.

FCHS scrimmage games are scheduled

Franklin County's varsity and junior varsity boys' soccer teams will host Group AA Brookville tonight in a scrimmage doubleheader in preparation for next week's season openers.

Match times at Benjamin Franklin Middle School are 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Also at BFMS today, the Eagles varsity and junior varsity softball teams will scrimmage Group A James River at 5 p.m.

James River's varsity squad lost in the quarterfinals of the Group A state tournament last year.

On Thursday, FCHS's junior varsity baseball team entertains Group AA Heritage in a scrimmage game at W.W. Naff Jr. Field at 5 p.m.

Youth wrestlers capture honors

ROANOKE -- Franklin County's youth wrestling team competed in a tournament in Roanoke Saturday and 23 of its wrestlers won medals.

The tournament was held at William Fleming High School and named in honor of former Colonels' wrestling and football coach George Miller.

Capturing gold medals were Dakota Collins, Dakota Cramblitt, David Fisher, Drew Fisher, Tristan Pendleton and Cosmo Varlamoss.

Winning silver medals were David Fisher, Luke Grimes, Bryce Hall, Justin Motley, Will Robertson and Alex Wooldridge.

Earning bronze medals were Jonathan Altice, R.T. Atkins, Damian Barnett, Randy Bates, Todd Brown, Riley Collins, Drew Fisher, Kody King, Devon Ross, Cameron Turner, Kendall Turner, Toby White and Cameron Wooldridge.

Panthers split 2 games in Florida

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Ferrum College's softball team dropped a 9-7 decision to York (Pa.) and defeated St. Benedict, 13-4, in games played during last week's Rebel Spring Games.

York led 7-0 after 3 1/2 innings before Ferrum (6-6) rallied, courtesy of a five-run fourth.

York tallied two runs each in the second and third and three in the fourth to establish its early edge.

York scored once in the top of the fifth to make the score 8-5, but Ferrum answered with its final two runs in the bottom of the frame.

York scored once in the top of the seventh to produce the final score.

York outhit Ferrum, 13-11. The Panthers committed two errors to York's one.

Ferrum starting pitcher Kaitlyn Culler (2-2) was charged with the loss.

Culler yielded six hits and seven runs, four of which were earned in 3 2/3 innings. She walked one and struck out three.

Shelbie Hall and Allyson Stevens worked in relief for the Panthers.

Second baseman Heather Littles paced Ferrum with three hits and two RBI, while third baseman Kashina Hancock (Franklin County) collected two hits and three RBI.

Also, Stevens, Culler, Rachel Shumaker, Meagan Farrell, Wendy Womack and Michelle Dunstan each had one hit.

Womack drove in two runs.

Ferrum trailed St. Benedict 2-1 through two innings, but in its half of the third, Ferrum erased that deficit by rallying for five runs.

The Panthers scored twice in the top of the fifth to make the score 8-2. St. Benedict netted two runs in the bottom of the frame to cut the deficit in half.

Ferrum capped the scoring in the top of the sixth by producing a second, five-run inning.

Ferrum outhit St. Benedict 15-7 and overcame four errors. St. Benedict committed two defensive blunders.

Culler was the Panthers' winning pitcher. In four innings, she surrendered four hits and two runs, neither of which was earned.

Culler walked one and struck out two.

Stevens pitched two innings of relief and permitted three hits and two runs, both of which were earned.

Rachel Shumaker (double) and Womack (two doubles) each collected three hits to lead the Panthers.

Culler and Hannah Shumaker (two doubles) each registered two hits, while Hancock (double), Hall, Ferrell, Barger and Littles each had one.

Ferrum returns to action this weekend in the annual Ferrum Invitational at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex in Salem.

The Panthers have scheduled pool games against Lycoming College and the University of Virginia's College at Wise on Saturday at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. and against Eastern Mennonite Sunday at 11 a.m.

Chamber Golf Classic is moving to April

Changes are coming to the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce's Golf Classic.

The 13th annual event is moving from September to April and from The Westalke Golf and Country Club to Willow Creek Country Club.

The tournament is scheduled for Saturday, April 24.

Tee times are 8:30 a.m. (morning flight) and 1:45 p.m. (afternoon flight).

Format is Captain's Choice.

Lunch will be served from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Awards will be presented to the first, second, third and last-place finishing teams during a ceremony scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Redwood Express team captured first-place accolades last year.

Haley/SML Junior Open is set for July

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE -- The 20th annual Andrew Haley Memorial/Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club Junior golf tournament will be played Monday and Tuesday, July 12-13 at Mariners Landing Golf and Country Club and The Waterfront Country Club.

Boys and girls ages 11-18 are eligible to compete.

Field is limited to the first 120 entries.

Sign-up fee is $70 with $10 off on entries postmarked on or by Friday, June 11.

Cheerleading tryouts are slated

Tryouts to select Franklin County's 2010-11 sideline cheer squads and mascots will be held March 30-31 and April1.

Tryouts will be held in Samuel M. Hawkins-Central Gymnasium.

A varsity, a junior varsity and a freshman squad and several mascots will be selected to cheer for football games, basketball games and pep rallies next year.

Students who wish to try out do not need to be able to tumble in order to do so.

A separate tryout for the competition cheer squad will be held in August.

Students who wish to try out must have a current physical form on file with the FCHS or Benjamin Franklin Middle School athletic department.

After making one of the squads or being chosen as a mascot, students will need an updated physical dated after May 1, but the school will provide an opportunity to get one for $10.

Each cheerleading candidate will be taught a cheer and dance for tryouts, and jumps also will be judged.

Stunt men (male cheerleaders) candidates will be judged on a cheer and their stunting ability.

Mascot candidates will be asked to dance freestyle while in the Eagle costume.

Ferrum to host USTA event

FERRUM -- Ferrum College will host a United States Tennis Association (USTA) Campus Kids Day Saturday, March 20.

The event will take place at the Burrows-Skeens Tennis Complex from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

This is a free event for ages 6-13.

Participants will be grouped by age and experience.

Wiffle Ball tournament to be held

Franklin County Baseball Booster Club will host a wiffle ball tournament Saturday, April 3 at Samuel M Hawkins-Central Gymnasium.

Play begins at 9 a.m.

Cost is $60 per team.

Competition will be held in two age divisions: 14 and younger and 15 and older.

Teams are to be comprised of five to six players.

Field is limited to 20 teams -- 10 in each age division.

Tournament is single-elimination.

Teams in the 14 and younger division must have an adult coach.
