Eagles win third straight league game

Monday, April 29, 2013

ROANOKE -- Franklin County scored five runs in the top of the second inning to break a 2-2 stalemate en route to an 8-6 Western Valley District varsity baseball win over Patrick Henry at Edward Field.

FCHS (3-2 in the WVD, 8-8 overall) squared its overall record with its second straight win, its third in a row in district play.

Trailing 7-4, the Patriots rallied by scoring two runs in the bottom of the third and two run in the last of the sixth to cut the deficit to a run.

The Eagles scored an insurance run in the top of the seventh and senior righthander Jessy Pendleton took the mound in the bottom of the frame and faced five batters to earn a save.

Singles by Kyle Ellis, Drew Moorman and Ryan Peevey produced the Eagles' seventh inning run.

Chad Huston worked five innings for the victory. He surrendered four runs, all earned on six hits and two walks.

Brandon Barbour pitched an inning of relief and allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on two hits.

PH's Jake Wright, who pitched 1 1/3 innings, was charged with the loss. He was tagged for six hits, five walks and seven runs, six of which were earned.

FCHS did record seven hits off Patriots' reliever Corey Hayth, but the Eagles only tallied one run, which was earned at his expense.

The two teams combined to strand 21 runners on base: 11 by FCHS, 10 by PH. Also, they combined to commit seven errors: four by the Eagles, three by the Patriots.

The Eagles collected 13 hits to nine by the Patriots.

A two-run triple by Jared Bridges, FCHS's only extra base hit, was the highlight of the Eagles' five-run second.

Moorman registered three hits to lead the Eagles, while Ryan Brewer, Bridges and Pendleton each recorded two and Logan Alger, Brett Simmons, Peevey and Ellis each had one hit.

For PH, Jimmy Butler and Evan Dyerle (double) each collected two hits, while Britt Dunnavant, Thomas Stockstill, Austin Lowman (double), Rob Brailsford and Justin Snellings each recorded one.

FCHS returns to action Thursday at Bassett. Game time is 5 p.m.

The Eagles' next district game is Friday against George Washington-Danville. Game time is 6 p.m. at Dan Daniel Memorial Park.
