Four players from Franklin County's 16-win softball team have earned All-Northwest Region accolades the 2013 season in a vote of the region's head coaches.
Sophomore catcher Mackenzie Chitwood has garnered first-team honors for the second year in a row, while junior pitcher Hali Saul and senior outfielder Hannah Dudley are second-team selections and sophomore shortstop Logan Barbour has received honorable mention recognition.
As a first-team choice, Chitwood is eligible for Group AAA All-State laurels. All-state selections are made by the Virginia High School Coaches Association (VHSCA).
Chitwood received honorable mention All-Group AAA accolades as a freshman.
Chitwood batted .468 with eight home runs, both team-best totals.
Two of the home runs she belted came in the regional tournament, one each in playoff triumphs over Mountain View and Osbourn Park.
Chitwood also paced the Eagles in hits (37), doubles (12) and RBI (33).
Chitwood also boasted a. 993 fielding percentage. She committed one error.
Saul, a righthander, finished the season with a 14-10 record. She made 22 starts for the Eagles and finished the year with 19 complete games and five shutouts.
Saul struck out 82 batters and walked 35 in 141 2/3 innings pitched.
Dudley, the Eagles' leftfielder, batted .333 this season with five doubles and a triple.
Barbour, FCHS's first-year starting shortstop, hit .342 with two home runs, both of which she belted in postseason play -- one in a district tournament triumph over Patrick Henry, the other in the regional tournament win over Mountain View.
Chitwood, Saul, Dudley and Barbour all are first team All-Western Valley District honorees.
Also selected to the first team was sophomore outfielder Ashley Keith. who registered game-winning hits this season in Eagles' victories over Halifax County, Salem and Jefferson Forest.
Keith batted .302 in her first season of varsity play.
The All-WVD team is chosen by a vote of the league's head coaches.
Selected to the second team from FCHS are designated player Becky France (.273 average), utility player Kameron Cundiff (.325 average), third baseman Sierra Naff (.300 average) and first baseman Taylor Greenway (.333 average).
Outfielder Jordan Whitcomb (.262 average) is honorable mention.
Halifax County infielder Meg Bane is the district's Player of the Year and Comets head coach Melanie Saunders in the league's Coach of the Year.
