It is fitting that as we approach Independence Day one of Franklin County's soldiers has been honored with a Bronze Star Medal with Combat V for Valor. The details of this award presented to First Lt. Stephen Huff, a 2005 graduate of Franklin County High School and 2009 graduate of Virginia Tech, are included in a front page story of today's News-Post.
First Lt. Huff's story, as well as the stories of many county soldiers who have been honored and written about over the years, reminds us just how fortunate we are to have the independence that so many people around the world can only dream about. But liberty comes at a price, and First Lt. Huff's service also reminds us that the fight for freedom around the world is continuing. Our soldiers still put themselves in harm's way, and they do so because they understand and appreciate what this country stands for -- freedom.
Please remember all of our soldiers, past and present, this Independence Day.
