Cheerleaders' youth clinic is set for Tuesday

Franklin County's varsity cheerleading squad will host its annual youth clinic Tuesday, July 23 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Roy M. Law Gymnasium on the high school campus.

Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.

Cost is $20.

The clinic is for youth ages 5 to 14.

Each participant will receive a gift and a list of camp cheers and chants.

Participants will receive instruction in chants, dance, cheers, jumps and stunts.

Parents will be allowed to take pictures of their children with the cheerleaders.

FCHS volleyball tryouts start Aug. 5

Tryouts for Franklin County's 2013 varsity and junior varsity volleyball team begin Monday, Aug. 5.

Tryouts are from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Harold Ramsey Gymnasium at FCHS.

Tryouts are open to students who will be in eighth through 12th grades during the 2013-14 school year.

Candidates can not try out without a Virginia High School League (VHSL) physical form dated May 1 of this year on file with the FCHS Athletic Department.

Registration is open for co-ed fall soccer

SONTAG -- Franklin County Department of Parks and Recreation is taking registrations for youth co-ed fall soccer.

There are six leagues: instructional (ages 4 and 5), modified (ages 6 and 7), minor (ages 8 and 9), major (ages 10 and 11), junior (ages 12 and 13) and senior (ages 14 through 18).

Eighteen-year-olds are eligible if they have not graduated from high school.

Cost is $20 plus a non-refundable registration fee of $20 that's charged only once each year from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014.

Ages are as Oct. 1.

Registration deadline is Thursday, Aug. 1

A $15 late fee will be assessed to all registrations submitted from Aug. 2 through Aug. 30.

The season runs from August to November.

Teams are formed based on age and school districts.

Coaches will meet in mid August to receive rosters, equipment and to choose practice times.

Practices will begin in late August and matches will begin in mid September.

The season is eight weeks with two weeks reserved at the end for make-up matches if needed.

Matches are played at Waid Recreation Area and Sports Complex at Six-Mile Post.

and at the Franklin County Recreation Park in Sontag.

HARDY -- Franklin County Lacrosse Club is taking registrations for youth boys' lacrosse.

This program is for ages 7 to 14 as of Aug. 31

Cost is a league fee of $60 plus a $20 non-refundable registration fee that's charged only once each year from July 1, 2013 to June 30, 2014.

The season runs from September to October.

The Franklin County Lacrosse Club is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing and promoting the sport of lacrosse in Franklin County and surrounding areas.
