SCRUGGS -- The 23rd annual Andrew Haley/Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club Junior golf tournament begins today at The Waterfront Country Club.

The final round of the 36-hole, stroke play event will be contested at Mariners Landing Golf and Country Club Tuesday.

All five divisions have competition and the tournament has attracted plays from Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, tournament official Jody Brown said.

A total of 92 golfers will compete, an increase of nine players from last year's 83-player count, Brown said.

The tournament's premier division, the boys' 16-18 age group, features two-time runner-up Nick Brediger of Roanoke, a former prep standout at Cave Spring, and Martinsville's Wesley Smith, who finished third a year ago. Smith plays for Carlisle.

Last year, Brediger lost the championship in a four-hole, sudden-death playoff contested at The Waterfront to John Bryant of Galax, who won the Group A individual championship last fall.

Bryant is not playing in this year's tournament.

Two year ago, Brediger and former James River standout Korey Watts finished in a tie for second place behind winner Tanner Carbaugh of Eggleston.

The field includes former Franklin County prep standout Kolton Cooper, a Group AAA state qualifier last fall who plans to continue his career at NCAA Division III Roanoke College.

Also, current FCHS prep players Landon Prillaman, a Group AAA state qualifier as a sophomore, Jeremy Lester, Tyler Peterson and Pearson Verhoven are in the field as are several golfers from Salem's 2012 Group AA state-title squad.

Competition is scheduled in the boys' 14-15, boys' 11-13, girls' 15-18 and girls' 11-14 age groups.

From 1991-2006, the Andrew Haley and the Smith Mountain Lake Lions Club Junior Open were separate tournaments. The events merged in 2007.
