A Bassett man will serve three years of a 10-year sentence for selling heroin.
George Clinton Haislip III, 21, was sentenced to 10 years in prison but Judge W.N. Alexander II suspended seven years.
Haislip pleaded guilty in May to distributing 2.58 grams of heroin on Sept. 19, 2012, through a controlled buy arranged by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
A second charge of attempted distribution of heroin was dismissed through a plea agreement.
Haislip will also be on probation for four years after his release.
Franklin County Commonwealth's Attorney Tim Allen said the controlled buy occurred at a retail store in Rocky Mount.
Haislip placed the heroin inside a Newport cigarette carton and left the carton next to a drink machine at the store, Allen said. The buyer, who had paid Haislip $400 at another location, then picked up the heroin.
