|Franklin County reaches tourney’s title round|

SPRINGFIELD -- District 12 titleholder Franklin County earned a berth in championship bracket play in the Virginia State Little League (age 10-11 division) baseball tournament, but was eliminated Sunday by District 5 winner Mechanicsville, 17-1, in the quarterfinals.
Championship bracket play is single-elimination. Play continues today and the title game is set for Tuesday.
In its victory, Mechanicsville exploded for 12 runs in its half of the first inning and tallied two runs in the second frame and three in the third.
Mechanicsville finished with 10 hits.
Franklin County scored its lone run in the top of the fourth. The local squad registered four hits and committed four errors.
Franklin County reached bracket play by finishing in second place in its pool, which was comprised of three teams, with a 1-1 record.
Franklin County lost its tournament opener Friday to bracket champion Green Run, the District 8 winner, 12-0.
Green Run scored once in the first, twice in the second and completed the shutout with a nine-run third.
Franklin County blanked Lebanon, the District 11 champion, 10-0 for its lone victory. In that game, the local squad held Lebanon without a hit.
Franklin County scored three runs in the first inning and seven runs in the third.
Franklin County finished with four hits and benefited from three Lebanon errors, while committing just one defensive miscue.
Franklin County is coached by Mark Turner. His assistants are Steve Dillon and Eddie Pagans.
