Mounted fox hunting has been practiced in the United States since the Colonial days. Early on, hounds of various breeds were imported from all over Europe. By 1900, as a result of breeding, the American foxhound came about.Â
The oldest continuing organized hunt in the U.S., the Piedmont Hunt, began in Virginia in 1840.

10-31-1948: Sportsmen from Virginia and surrounding states brought their best hounds last Monday to Baskerville, near South Hill, for the twenty-sixth annual field trials of the Virginia Fox Hunters Association.
10-21-1948: Two veteran fox hunters, L.N. Jeter and John Blair, both of Richmond, talk while the dogs drink. The field trials were held on the Baskerville plantation of E.W. Gordon, an association member and South Hill business man, and was well attended by hunters and visitors from near-by South Hill, where many of the exhibitors stayed during the meeting. Prizes for the events were given by individuals and by organizations such as the Montpelier, Warrenton, Orange County, Deep Run, Middleburg, Farmington and Keswick Hunts.
01-02-1943: New Years Day Hunt of Deep Run Hunt Club. Numerous visitors and members of the armed forces attended the hunt, which attracts Virginia men yearly. The whippers-in were F. Wilson Craigie and Miss Georginia Marraccini. Hat off, Captain Victor Alenitch, honorary huntsman, casts the hounds.
11-27-1953: Blessing of the hounds--the twenty-fourth annual service of the blessing of the hounds took place yesterday at Grace Episcopal Church in Albermarle County. This photo was taken from the door of the church, showing minister in foreground and mounted riders and hounds assembled before him. The service is one of the few of its kind in the United States and the only one in Virginia.
