A North Carolina man was killed and a Franklin County woman wounded in a shooting incident early Saturday in the Snow Creek section of Franklin County, the sheriff’s office there said.

The slain man was identified as Ricky Lee Southern, 54, of Reidsville, North Carolina. The sheriff’s office has not released the name of the woman who was wounded, but said she is 58 years old.

Forrest Christopher Fielder, 58, of Chatham was charged with second-degree murder and is being held without bond at the Franklin County Jail, according to a news release from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

The news release outlined an investigation that appeared to span several localities, beginning with a midnight notification from Pittsylvania County’s emergency center to Franklin County that Pittsylvania deputies were answering a call to a shooting on Burton Lake Road.

There they found the wounded woman, who was taken to the hospital with a life-threatening injury.

Dispatchers were told the shooting occurred at Barbour Lane in Franklin County at the home of the female victim, the news release said.

Franklin County deputies went to a mobile home on Barbour Lane, in the Snow Creek area, and found Southern. He appeared to have been killed by a gunshot, the news release said.

Fielder also was present at Barbour Lane, Sgt. Megan Patterson of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office wrote in an email. He was charged with second-degree murder and using a firearm to commit a felony, and is being held without bond at the Franklin County Jail, the news release said.
