04-29-1964 (cutline): Stud-Studded Bridge-- Workmen began installing 21,000 tiny street studs yesterday on the northern end of the Ninth Street Bridge, in a move to prevent skidding when the narrow span is wet. City officials called it an experimental project which may be extended if it's successful. The studs, which look somewhat like flattened golf shoe cleats, will protrude about a quarter-inch above the bridge surface, and will be installed at the rate of about 17.5 studs per square foot.
