After a career as an ironworker, Christopher Brown never forgot how to make the family barbecue sauce that had been passed down at least three generations. Growing up, he learned the barbecue ropes in the kitchen at the Deliverance Temple Church of God in Christ, the East Side house of worship where his mother – Lula Mae Brown, a civil rights advocate and church official – was asked to cook for almost every occasion in the 1960s. Lula’s legacy shines in Big Mama’s, which stars Christopher’s barbecue rib dinner and soul food crafted by his daughter, Chantelle Brown Phillips, who also learned under Lula's tutelage.
