SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. — Spotsylvania County officials and partners gathered off Massaponax Church Road on Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, at the future site of Spotsylvania County Fire Station 12 to break ground on the project.
“This additional staffing and apparatus will significantly improve our ability to meet the increasing demand for emergency services in one of the county’s busiest and fastest-growing areas,” said Spotsylvania County Interim Fire Chief Jason Irby after the event. “The new station will also provide much-needed relief to surrounding stations, improve response capabilities, and strengthen overall system capacity.”
As Tower 1 displayed the colors overhead, county leaders, emergency personnel and other staff joined contracted project partners from construction company Carlson Bros. and design firm BKV Group for Wednesday’s event. Irby, Berkeley District Supervisor David Goosman and BKV Group’s Mark Manetti spoke at the ceremony.
The new fire station at 5302 Massaponax Church Road will house an engine, ladder truck, ambulance, shift commander and EMS supervisor. The County Capital Improvement Project is expected to be completed in spring 2028. The project’s estimated total cost is about $15 million.
Wielding gold shovels to officially break ground on the project were Deputy Fire Chief Steve Cooper, Assistant County Administrator Ben Loveday, Interim Fire Chief Irby, Battlefield District Supervisor Chris Yakabouski, Supervisor Goosman, Deputy Fire Chief of Support Services Carl Roberts, Mark Carlson of Carlson Bros. and Manetti of BKV Group.
“We owe our residents a station that is dependable, functional and built to serve this community for years to come. When someone calls 911, they may be having one of the worst days of their life. They need help, and they are counting on us to be ready,” Irby said during his remarks at the event. “The planning, staffing, apparatus and construction we are talking about today all support our ability to answer that call.”
