FERRUM — The Blue Ridge Institute and Museum will kick off this Saturday’s Blue Ridge Folklife Festival with a ribbon cutting to mark it’s 52nd year showcasing the history of Southwest Virginia.
Antique powered hay bailing demonstrations will be one of the many traditional techniques on display at this Saturday’s Blue Ridge Folklife Festival at Ferrum College.

Marshall Cofer of Triple F Farm in Bedford County watches as mule Doc McCabe clears 40” to win the Class A (52” and under) Virginia State Coon Mule Jumping Championship on Saturday at the Blue Ridge Folklife Festival. “That little mule is only 36 inches tall and jumped 40 inches,” Cofer said. “He has good style and was impressive for just having one day of practice.”
Festival-goers rest under the autumn foliage of maple trees at the 51st annual Blue Ridge Folklife Festival held Saturday on the campus of Ferrum College. Blue Ridge Institute and Museum executive director Bethany Worley said that an estimated 10,000 people attended this year’s festival. “We are really happy with the attendance,” she added, “the weather was wonderful especially the cool breeze.”
