ICE made 4,179 arrests in Virginia by late July. Most detainees lacked criminal records, while state and federal officials escalate immigration enforcement with National Guard support.

Ricardo Martinez-Cantarero's car was found with a shattered window on the side of the road. He's since been deported to his home country of Honduras, community organizers said.

Email exchanges between immigration officials and local sheriff deputies show how local law enforcement is helping make those arrests.

"I thought he was kidnapped," said Jessica, speaking through a translator. "I sat there like crazy, screaming, and I called the police."

At a meeting of the jail's board, the jail’s superintendent said Riverside Regional Jail is short on cash and hopeful that more work for the feds will plug the gaps.

Cristian Romo-Bermejo, an engineering student at Virginia Tech and an undocumented Mexican immigrant, has been detained by federal immigration agents.
