‘The Mandalorian & Grogu’ Delivers Lowest Ever ‘Star Wars’ Opening

‘Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu’ has topped the US box office despite recording the lowest opening weekend ever for a live-action ‘Star Wars’ movie. The Jon Favreau-directed ‘Star Wars’ spin-off earned $82 million domestically, narrowly falling short of 2018’s ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’s’ $84 million debut. The film was projected to reach $102 million by the end of Memorial Day weekend, just below ‘Solo’s’ $103 million total. ‘Solo’ was the first movie in the franchise to lose money, with a production cost of about $300 million. ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ cost $165 million, but could still turn a profit. The film earned $64 million internationally, bringing its global three-day total to $145 million and a projected four-day total of $165 million. The movie follows the Mandalorian, played by Pedro Pascal, and Grogu, also known as Baby Yoda, as they rescue Rotta the Hutt, who is voiced by Jeremy Allen White. The project marks Favreau’s first ‘Star Wars’ feature following his TV work on ‘The Mandalorian,’ ‘The Book of Boba Fett,’ and ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.’
