The first round of the NFL Draft is done and dusted, and sportsbooks are already taking bets on which team will win the upcoming Super Bowl.
There aren’t many surprises near the top of the board, but there are a couple of intriguing long shots and dark horses. Here are our favorite Super Bowl odds and picks after the first round of the NFL Draft:
2024 Super Bowl Odds: 49ers, Chiefs favored to appear in New Orleans
The reigning Super Bowl champions are normally the favorites heading into the next year, however, that isn’t the case this time.
The San Francisco 49ers, runner-ups in the last Super Bowl, lead the way in betting odds. Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, who took them down in overtime, are next on the board.
The Baltimore Ravens are still yet to reach the Super Bowl in Lamar Jackson’s tenure as the starting quarterback but finally made the AFC Championship Game last year. They are third in odds, followed by their AFC North rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Detroit Lions round out the top five and are the second NFC team to appear on the list after they also reached the championship game stage a year ago, where they blew a 17-point halftime lead against the Niners.
The Buffalo Bills, Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Philadelphia Eagles and Green Bay Packers are all in the next tier of contenders. Philly is the only one of them to make the Super Bowl since 2011, but they lost six of their final seven games a year ago.
Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl odds (+650 or better)
It’s always important to be honest, and the truth is that the Chiefs don’t deserve to be underdogs against anyone. They already won three Super Bowls since Mahomes took over and just won their second straight title in a “rebuilding” year.
The defense suffered a loss in the form of L’Jarius Sneed, but the franchise has proven itself to be excellent at developing corners in recent years. They also re-signed Chris Jones and should be elite on defense just the same way they were last year when they allowed the second-fewest points and yards per game.
Mahomes is quite simply the most unstoppable force in the league and will have more support following the acquisition of Marquise “Hollywood” Brown. Andy Reid is also one of the best coaches in the league, and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo regularly out-schemes opposing coordinators during the playoffs. Bet against them at your own peril.
In the opening round of the draft, the Chiefs took combine record-setter Xavier Worthy, a receiver from Texas with a show-stopping 4.21 time in the 40-yard dash.
Cincinnati Bengals Super Bowl odds (+1400 or better)
Joe Burrow is often referred to as Mahomes’ and the Chiefs’ kryptonite since he beat them in three of four meetings, one of which helped him and the Bengals book a ticket in Super Bowl 56.
Burrow missed the back half of 2023 with a torn ligament in his wrist and dealt with a variety of injuries before that. When healthy, he proved himself to be worthy of the title of the second-best QB in the league, and he habitually performed in clutch moments.
The Bengals still have an elite receiving corps and strengthened their offensive line, including drafting Amarius Mims from Georgia at No. 18. Trey Hendrickson wants out of town and will be a major loss if he is not replaced properly, but the arrival of Geno Stone should be a major boost to the secondary.
Super Bowl long shots: Los Angeles Rams (+3200 or better)
How quickly the sports world is to forget. The Rams won seven of their final eight regular-season games and were one point away from eliminating the Detroit Lions in the Wild Card round. They would’ve had a great chance to win the divisional round and likely wouldn’t have thrown away a 17-point lead in the NFC Championship Game had they gotten that far.
Matthew Stafford showed after the halfway point of the season that he is far from done, especially with Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua available on the outside. Kyren Williams also developed into a quality running back, while the defense made a couple of key upgrades in the form of Tre’Davious white and Kamren Curl.
Sean McVay is one of the sharpest and most innovative coaches in the league and should have this team competitive nearly every year. Aaron Donald’s retirement will take its toll in key moments, but this is still a very strong team. The team took edge rusher Jared Verse from Florida State at No. 19, who has a pro comp to Trey Hendrickson and could start from Day 1.
