Well over a thousand eager shoppers are expected to descend on Resurrection Catholic Church in Moneta this Friday and Saturday for its annual Joyous Junque yard sale.Â
The popular community event offers a variety of furniture, household items, electronics, tools and even sporting goods. Each item selected for the sale is good quality and priced to be sold.
"We are continuing with the idea of being a little more selective," said Terry Culton, co-coordinator of the sale this year along with his wife, Helen.

Crews work throughout the year picking up donated items from homes around the Smith Mountain Lake area. In recent years, Terry Culton said, they have made more of an effort to assure the items are good quality before they pick them up.Â
Beneath the giant tent set up near the church this week is a variety of high-quality household furniture. Most of it is like new from homes where the pieces were rarely used. Those quality items will be available at yard sale prices, Culton said.Â
With the sale, people are able to purchase nicer furniture than they might otherwise not be able to afford, while Resurrection is able to receive money that goes directly to their fundraising efforts.
"We have skilled eyes who identify the value," said Helen Culton. "We sometimes price it less than half."
Volunteers work for several weeks before the sale organizing the items. Culton said more than 100 volunteers help make the event come together each year, from unloading and pricing to even making small repairs.
"My team has been tremendous," Culton said.
The efforts have shown over the years. The sale often brings visitors from within the community and beyond. Many wait in line for hours before the start of the sale for the opportunity to purchase the quality items.
As in previous years, Joyous Junque has a few unique items for the sale this weekend. One of those items is a highly collectible 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Dale Earnhardt Edition, expected to sell for a little under $10,000.Â

Everything is priced to be sold. The church's goal with each sale is clear out all stock and start fresh for the next year.
While the prices are low, the profits are high. The church makes around $80,000 from each sale, Terry Culton said. Those profits are split between approximately 25 nonprofits in the surrounding community.
Culton said Joyous Junque often comes at a good time for area nonprofits that struggle for donations during the summer months. Many nonprofits receive their donations around tax time and around Christmas, which leaves a long stretch of needed funding in the middle of the year.
Those needs have increased in recent years with uncertainty in the economy.Â
"Many food pantries are empty," Culton said. "They are all struggling to keep their fridges full."
This year's Joyous Junque yard sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Handsome Zaxby needs you to know it's nothing against you — he's just a shy fellow who wants to get to know you better on his own terms. After spending some time with him, he will slowly warm up to pets. He gains his confidence with another dog around, and likely would thrive with another dog in the home. He does, however, dislike cats. Zaxby loves nothing more than curling up in a soft, fluffy blanket and will snore loudly! Zaxby is just about 18 months old and weighs 47 pounds. He is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and house trained.
Little Kate is just about 1 year old. She was found near a dumpster site and has been fending for herself for a while. Kate is hopeful that she'll find a loving, indoor-only home where she won't have to worry about where her next meal comes from. With all that this lovely girl has endured, she still has a big heart and a loud purr. Kate is a lovable little girl, who is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and house trained. She can't wait to meet her forever person soon!
