Sixty-five seniors are set to participate in Wednesday’s immersive experience.
High school students from Henrico County Public Schools (HCPS) will explore local government, engage with county leaders and reflect on real-world emergency response efforts during Henrico County’s 67th Student Government Day on Wednesday, March 4.
A total of 65 students from Henrico’s nine public high schools, The Academy at Virginia Randolph and the Henrico Virtual Academy are scheduled to participate.
This year’s Student Government Day will focus on the county’s response to the water crisis of January 2025, giving students an in-depth look at how departments collaborated to serve residents and protect public health during the emergency.
Seven students are expected to highlight what they have learned and present projects related to the county’s response. Their presentations will reflect on how departments worked together and will explore issues such as emergency preparedness, communication with the community, infrastructure resilience and long-term solutions to challenges affecting the county.
Throughout the day, students will spend time with county officials and staff to learn more about their roles and responsibilities, as well as the programs and services provided to residents and the community. Participants also will have opportunities to tour Jail West, the Water Treatment Facility and the county’s data center. Voter registration will be available for students who are eligible.
Students will share their presentations during a mock meeting of the Board of Supervisors at 1 p.m. in the Board Room at the Henrico County Government Center, 4301 E. Parham Road. Members of the news media are welcome to provide coverage.
“Student Government Day is one of the most exciting days of the year because it brings our work to life through the voices and ideas of our students,” said Victoria Davis, the event’s coordinator for Henrico’s Outreach & Engagement Agency. “Seeing them engage with real challenges like the water crisis reminds us why public service matters and how powerful collaboration can be when a community comes together.”
Student Government Day was first held in 1958 and was long supported by the Kiwanis clubs of North Richmond, Tuckahoe and Greater Richmond. The Board of Supervisors will take no official action as part of its participation in Student Government Day.
