The issue of stray electricity around docks at Smith Mountain Lake has garnered renewed attention following the death of an 18-year-old from Colorado on Thursday possibly due to voltage in the water.
Some 400 people gathered Friday at Holy Name and St. Martin of Tours Catholic Parish in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, for a candlelight prayer vigil in memory of Jesse Hamric. Hamric died Thursday after being rescued from the water near a dock at Smith Mountain Lake.
Neil Harrington with the Smith Mountain Lake Marine Volunteer Fire Department points to the metal bars on a boat lift that can sometime be the source of stray voltage around a dock when they are lowered into the water. He was one of multiple lake residents who pushed for updates to the Virginia Construction Code in 2019 to prevent the stray voltage from getting into the water.
